Japan lowered the age of adulthood from 20 to 18 in April,2022 by revising the Civil Code and changing the legal definition of an adult.
We had been held up throughout our high school days due to the corona pandemic. We could hardly attend most classes or school activities. Meanwhile, it came to the last year of high school which is the year of study and preparation for entrance examinations to universities. Soon after that, we graduated from high school at the age of 18. At the same time, we were suddenly in the position to take on responsibilities as an adult in society, even though we didn't feel we were ready to be an adult. Unfortunately, we feel that we have missed some passages to be adult as we had to spend a locked-up school life under the corona restrictions.
So, this is us.
We will be holding our first group exhibition "ROOM206" at "3331 Arts Chiyoda". This place used to be a classroom. The classroom is the place where the leader guides the followers. In other words, it's the place where authoritarianism is happening. The classroom was the place where we took art classes, drew pictures, and created our world under the guidance of the leader. After time spent in the classroom, we became adults. "ROOM206" is our new beginning. We are free to express ourselves and draw in this classroom.
However, we are still confused and wandering in between the past and future. Feeling nostalgic for the old school days and we have some expectations with a bit of anxiety for the future.
We felt this classroom "ROOM206" reflects our feelings, and it symbolizes us.
So, we named our exhibition "ROOM206"
