ARTDYNE is pleased to present Saori Doi's solo exhibition "The Night of the Witch Apprentice".
Saori Doi was born in Aichi prefecture and grew up in Kanagawa and Tokyo. She completed her postgraduate course in Japanese painting at Tohoku University of Art & Design in 2010 and currently lives and works in Yamagata.
Saori Doi's work is full of a mysterious richness. Covering wooden panels with cold gauze and mixing pigments such as plaster to create a sense of materiality, the paintings have a certain earthiness to them, but also a certain sublimity. It is a process of forgiveness and acceptance of life and death in this world, while rebelling against each other. Is what Doi calls a "witch" an apostle of God or a messenger of the devil?
