We are pleased to hold Ayako Ishiba's solo exhibition "Absence and existence" as a special part of 3331 ART FAIR Recommended Artists. By capturing ordinary objects in everyday landscapes with minimal intervention, Ayako Ishiba creates photographs evocative of paintings that mislead the viewer's perception. The Japanese characters for "photograph" (写真, shashin) can translate as "reproduce truth". Through this medium, and with slight real-world manipulation, Ishiba's artwork ventures to depict landscapes of uncertain truth, exposing the relationship between what exists and what is absent.
This exhibition takes a step beyond Ishiba's previous approach--drawing contour lines on her subjects--by focusing on a phenomenon found mainly in printing techniques, wherein "white" is regarded as "absence". Something should exist but is absent; something should be absent but exists. With her latest techniques, Ishiba grapples with the philosophical proposition arising from this paradox. In this era of developing digital technology, when we can process images as we wish with the press of a button, Ishiba dares to use analog methods to boldly challenge the worlds of two-dimension (plane) and three-dimension (solid/perspective), effortlessly shifting the viewer's perception.

Artist's statement
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever felt your heart skip a beat when seeing a fallen object on the roadside? The moment I realize it's just a glove, I feel relieved. Even though that "fallen object" and that "glove" exist as the same thing, a single difference in my perception drastically changes how I see the world.
When someone decides something is a certain way, I respond with an alternative. I want to produce differing viewpoints; I want to expand the world. Through my artwork, I question gaps in each viewer's perspective and minute perceptions.
"Everything that is visible hides something that is invisible. However, what is visible hides nothing." (Quoted from a painter.)
Guided by these words, I re-examine what is visible and what may be invisible but certainly exists or used to exist.

- Ayako Ishiba
