3331ART FAIR recommended artists #037
Junya Kataoka + Rie Iwatake < Big Two-Hearted River >

3331 Arts Chiyoda is delighted to present "Big Two-Hearted River", an exhibition of works by 3331 ART FAIR 2018 recommended artist duo, Junya Kataoka and Rie Iwatake.
Kataoka and Iwatake started presenting installation works that combine each other's creations on the occasion of undergoing a residency in Paris in 2013. By adding new energy to familiar objects like paper, books, and lightbulbs, the artists transform their original function into changed movements that become kinetic artworks of peculiar phenomena. Furthermore, the pair expresses their own unique worldview through meticulously assembled collage works that combine various scraps and materials, visually taking viewers back and forth between multiple strata of space and time.
How would the world look if we could see it again with fresh eyes? It is as though Kataoka and Iwatake are gently offering us this newfound landscape.
The pair's activities continue to attract attention as in 2019 they exhibited at Bloc Projects in Sheffield, England, and participated in Ostrale Biennale 019 of Dresden, Germany. For this exhibition held at 3331 Arts Chiyoda, they even display installation work inspired by our art center. We look forward to welcoming you to this specially made exhibition of Kataoka and Iwatake's works.

ーーーーー
A white, square piece of paper slowly drops from the height of the ceiling. Hit with air resistance, the paper sways slightly, but never slants so far that it drops. A lightbulb continues to spin around and around on the floor. Strangely, it never stops. These may seem like familiar phenomena, but without the chance to gaze intently at their movement on a regular basis, viewers' eyes become hooked. Moreover, collage pieces were made out of illustrated reference books from which the artists lined up iconology by freely connecting associations - rather than putting unrelated things into collision. It feels as though the work flowed out of the artists' minds into our space. Brimming with a primal and luscious sense of awe towards the world, Kataoka and Iwatake's works bring back our childhood curiosity.
