3331 Arts Chiyoda is delighted to present "midsummer nightdown", a solo exhibition of works by 3331 ART FAIR 2018 recommended artist, Natsumi Suzuki.

For this exhibition, Suzuki will take on the theme of "summer", which in Japanese happens to be "natsu", one of the characters in the artist's name. In expressing the heavy air and the fantasies surrounding a hot summer night, her work will raise our consciousness through paintings that interweave the disturbances held within our hearts.
Up to this day, Suzuki has been painting onto canvas what she feels in everyday life through the five senses. She has developed a variety of brush touches, drawing out layers of people, animals, and sounds, to create a diverse range of artworks.
On one hand, from Suzuki's artworks, we get feelings of love, warmth, and softness; while at the same time, there exists an inherent sensuality and coldness, even a piercing quality. The viewers are made to read images and codes scattered across the surface as if they were solving a secret message.

▼ Artist Statement

"From a long day to a short night.
When we reach our limit with the heat, it's good to have downtime to enjoy lingering, it's also good to slowly chill out and rest.
If a fairy were to land here, I'd like to do things like discuss what kind of octopus dishes we'd eat 11 days later.
The summer solstice shifts the yin yang symbol, warping its form.
At times, it appears out of balance, or in perfect form, this is where the yin yang shows all its faces in fascinating ways, disrupting and mixing up the hearts of those that approach it.
I am saying with all certainty, that the summer solstice is a perfect stage to be romped upon by Betty Page, Tempest Storm, or Tura Satana.
Know what I mean?"

▼ Comment by Selector

Underlying the information that builds an era, various cultural codes with unretainable prototypes become embedded into fine levels and shaped into communication. In Natsumi Suzuki's paintings, these cultural codes - in other words, trends or forms of beauty born in different parts of the world - are recreated through their influence on each other into a new script. It is then the thawing out of information embedded in this script when the image in the painting emerges. Like turning through the pages of a style magazine, we feel our senses softly moved.
