Regional Code Asia volume.2

In tandem with the Regional Code Asia archive 3331 has initiated a series of regular events to introduce the activities of some of the most interesting alternative arts engagements in the region. This is a great opportunity to discover the eclectic approaches to the possibilities of arts expression and collaboration in many different parts of Asia.

In this volume we are pleased to have as our guests two artists and organizers, Nguyen Anh Tuan and Nguyen Phuong Linh, both based in Hanoi and active leaders of the Nhasan Studio. They will be presenting about their individual practices, the activity of Nhasan Studio as well as providing a wider overview of the contemporary arts scene in Hanoi and Vietnam as a whole.

Nha San Duc
Nhasan studio is a traditional wooden house on stilts that was built in 1992 by Nguyen Manh Duc. In 1998 Tran Luong and Nguyen Manh Duc turned Nhasan studio into an experimental art space.

Nhasan studio was among the first alternative and non profit spaces for contemporary art not only in Hanoi, but also the whole country. It opens for local and international artists to present new kinds of media such as video, performance, sound, music, installation...

Nhasan brings the chance for Vietnamese experimental artists to create and show their works, which is very meaningful in developing their artistic practices and share their experiences and invigorate an artist community that is hungry for change and at times it is to risky for contemporary art. It also brings chances to Vietnamese artists to collaborate with other international artists in order to create culture exchange, network, develop and learn more from the outside over the last 12 years.

The first generation of Vietnamese avant-garde artists since early 90's such as Truong Tan, Tran Luong, Nguyen Van Cuong, Nguyen Minh Thanh, Nguyen Quang Huy, Ea Sola, Kim Ngoc... has created the prestigious beginning. It became a valuable basis for the next generations to develop the cultural scene. After that the young generation including Nguyen Manh Hung, Pham Ngoc Duong, Nguyen Huy An, Nguyen Phuong Linh, Lai Dieu Ha... had created an exciting environment to Vietnamese contemporary art.

Nguyen Anh Tuan
born in 1981, Hanoi. Studied graphic design at Open University and Fine Art at Hanoi Fine Art University. Experiments with a wide range of expressions and art practices including: installations, video art, conceptual art, performance art. Has joined many international art events and exhibitions including performances in Berlin in Germany, solo exhibition and live performance in China in a residency program, Luxembourg residency, international contemporary art festival in HCM city, national contemporary art festival in Hanoi...
Artist Statement: "The thing that I concern the most is to deeply understand about the substance of a human being's existence. Therefore, I have a strong desire of understanding myself more as well as the complicated connection between individual and society. My works is the mixture of imagination and the truth of deep thought like the border line between reality and dreams."

Phuong Linh Nguyen
Born in Hanoi in 1985, Phuong Linh Nguyen has exhibited and held artist residencies with
the Borsa di studio of the Accademia Albertina delle Belle Arti (Turin, Italy), Yunnan-
Vietnam Female Artists Exchange program (Kunming, China) and Kunst - face at Malateh
art space, Chiang Mai Thailand... In Vietnam she has participated in group shows such as:
Lim Dim - the International Performance Art Festival at the Goethe Institute, British
Council, Nhasan studio and Ryllega gallery Hanoi; Line Drawing - drawings with site
specific installation in Contemporary Art Festival at Vietnam Fine Art University; Chewing in
10+ at Nhasan studio...; and her solo exhibition Salt at Galerie Quynh in Ho Chi Minh city
2009. She recently participated in "Beyond Pressure" the second annual performance art
festival in Yangon, Myanmar 2009, and soon is taking part in Art-plus_jp performance art
project in Nagano, Japan 2010.
Phuong Linh Nguyen's work reflects her interest in sexuality and femininity, transformation
and the ephemeral. Her work is often both sensual and sexual, humble and exalted.
Recently her work has drawn to the natural material, such as salt, fruit, and animal's bones,
attempting to engage the viewer in synesthetic experiences of the material's multiple
meanings.
Besides being a visual artist she also programs and organizes art events at Nhasan studiothe
non profit studio of experimental art in Hanoi. In 2009 she organized the rock concert
"Giao Chi", in 2010 she is curating the "Emerging Artist Program" a series of six solo
exhibitions at Nhasan studio and is the head organizer of IN:ACT - a five day international
performance art festival in Hanoi. In 2011, she is organizing "Nhasan Comrade In
Residency" that brings artists from post-communist countries to Hanoi, Vietnam.
Phuong Linh writes reviews and critiques of contemporary artists and events in Hanoi for
the Fine Art Association (published book in 2010: 12 contemporary artists of Vietnam), East
West magazine, Youth magazine and Man magazine.
