There is a theory that Australopithecus began to walk not just one at a time,
but all at once in the evolution process of the human race.
What on earth happens when we begin to create all together, all at the same time?
3331 wants to become the impulse for all of us to stand up together and do something.
Leap before you look!

As its inaugural exhibition, 3331 Arts Chiyoda presents "Look if you like, but you will have to leap", an exhibition of 6 projects which reflect the overall objective of the arts centre in connecting art with community. The key feature of these projects is the creation of a new awareness towards civic engagement in local regions and the fostering of independent forms of organization for participants through an original "operating system".
The title "Look if you like, but you will have to leap" originates from the title of a short story by the Nobel Prize winner for literature Oe Kenzaburo. Leap means not to flounder in an enclosed world but to open the door to outside and begin to step into a new territory. Rather than continuing the unconscious activity of everyday, it demands a greater concern for and understanding of the wider world. This sentiment encapsulates the vision of 3331 Arts Chiyoda and is therefore a fitting title for its first show.
The artists participating in this exhibition will present projects which involve collaboration with residents of various local areas, engaging in creative activities which merge with the everyday. As participants in these projects local residents are able to experience a leap from the trivial actions of the everyday and this leap may be considered as art, ensuing a transformation which may spread like a wave and release latent potentials of the communities.
These art projects take the everyday as the starting point from which to generate art and position themselves as new operating systems(devices for creative engagement) which structure an environment for the development of local communities. In these projects we do not only find value in the completed works but also in the process of collaboration, in which local residents are galvanized towards creative activity in which the essence of art can be observed. These projects challenge the conventional view of art as object, stepping out into the world beyond and proposing a new form of approach. Leap before you look!
