Artist: Nao Oishi

One of the appeals of the world generated by Oishi's art is her probing of the surface "feel" or texture of the paintings themselves. She paints without leaving any traces of brushstrokes, in a way that looks as if the pigments have been rubbed into the canvas. She blurs outlines with an exquisite touch and instills her paintings with a vague, elusive atmosphere. Thus far, she has utilized the time-consuming technique of applying and smoothening layer after layer of thin oil pigments on a base coat of plaster as if to entirely fill its grain. For the new works in this exhibition, in contrast, she ventured a new style of depiction; she applied the methodology of first waxing paper and then painting with oils as if they were watercolors. This produced a texture with a warmth and clearness resembling that of human skin. Milk pitcher, hat, squash, people, the memory of fog...while depicting such subjects, which are everyday motifs for the artist, her works draw us into a vision that is all her own.
