CfSHE Gallery is pleased to announce the collective exhibition by the international Mokuhanga Artists with works from MI-LAB Lake Kawaguchi Residency Advanced Program held in this Summer period.
The season of autumn in Japan is characterized by the beauteous coloured leaves which remind us of Nishiki 錦 - Japanese brocade with various colored threads, what the alias of this season Kinshū 錦秋: Autumn of Nishiki comes from. Some of the traditional watercolor-based woodblock printmaking in Japan were called Nishiki-e 錦絵 (multi-colored prints under Ukiyo-e woodblock prints category) and nowadays its tradition has been developed to Contemporary arts with various styles of expression.
This exhibition will give you a glimpse of the expressions: contemporary themes with technique which conserves the traditional stream - poetic themes common both in western and in Japan which expressed by printmaking with more pictorial approach - series of technical and compositional expression researches seeking for technical possibility of woodblock prints, resulting in giving prints poetic sensitivity - repeats of images in larger dimension which would suggest the shape of Japanese classic folding screen or paper sliding doors rendered under western points of view - simplification in monotone with conserving use of traditional materials of woodblock prints and experiments of various printing strategies to convert its results into a contemporary art, making work conceptual and physical at the same time.
