AIR 3331 Exhibition: “Not At Home + At Home”

Artists: Hsiao Chi Chang & Sami Cronk

Hsiao-Chi Chang is a freelance illustrator from Taiwan. Her project is inspired by the Japanese illustrator, Ryouji Arai. She is creating 4 handmade picture books using the adapting method from a book called "荒井良二の絵本じゃあにぃ" ("Ryouji Arai no ehon jyaanii") (Translation: "Picture book journeys by Ryouji Arai").
She paints some visual inspirations after walking around the Chiyoda area for 1 hour every 3 days with different routes. She then takes those inspiration paintings as the main element to create handmade picture books. All the paintings and picture books are improvised work -- this is how she likes to create things the most.

Sami Cronk is a mixed media artist from the United States.
During her residency, she has collected various small objects around Tokyo that she finds interesting or sentimental. Many of the items remind her of the household, or a feeling of "home". She took these objects and utilized them and recreated them through drawing, painting, and sculpture. In this work Sami has been exploring the beauty of ordinary objects and the sentimentality of personal items.
