Artist: Lily Macrae
Scottish painter Lily Macrae presents solo exhibition of work created over the past month on residence with AIR 3331. Consisting of large-scale painting and preparatory studies, Lily draws on connections between the transient nature of the painterly gesture and the human architecture of old European masters such as Peter Paul Rubens and Caravaggio. Finding compositional elements and colour connections from ukiyo-e, in particular the work of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Lily's paintings take historic images and place them in a contemporary aesthetic. Her work involves the construction of forms which collapse and are lost, then rebuilt layer by layer.
