To commemorate the release of "Catchers I-IV," a new series of prints by contemporary artist Kiki Smith, Gallery KIDO Press is going to hold an exhibition titled "Kiki Smith: Implosion - Body, and Stars" from May 5 (Sat.) to June 10 (Sun.).One of America's major female artists, Kiki Smith came to prominence in the 1980s for her sculptures bound up with corporeality and feminism, and cannot be overlooked in any discussion of contemporary art. At the same time, production of prints has occupied an important position in her activities of artistic creation. From 2003 to 2004, the New York Museum of Modern Art Queens (MoMA QNS) held a large exhibit titled "Kiki Smith: Prints, Books, and Things" that showcased her as an innovative printer. As this evidences, she has also established a solid position for herself in the genre of printing.
Besides promptly presenting "Catchers I-IV," an important series of four prints that were just produced in April 2018, to Japanese art lovers, this exhibition displays "Puppetry," a series of five prints made at KIDO Press in 2012, and two milestone works created by the artist at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in the 1990s, namely "Kiki Smith 1993" (1993) and "Worm" (1992).
"The 'Catchers' pieces were made as small performances of hands grasping one another. There is a star engraved on each joint, creating a constellation made by chance, where they intersect.
'Puppetry' (prints) also are moments of small performances." Kiki Smith, 2018
