Shuntaro Tanikawa (born 1931) is one of the most widely read and highly regarded of Japanese living poets. What is less known about him is his passion for radios and radio engineering.
In 2010, he donated his extensive collection of vintage, mainly American radios to the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT), along with associated posters and publications. Apart from an exhibition in 2011, these remain in the library and archive of KIT. They have never had an interpretative work created for them individually or as a collection.
KYOTO D-Lab held a workshop in collaboration with the Royal College of Art (RCA) in November 2016 which aimed to bring the collection to life and underscore its significance to the work of this unique poet. The participants were designers of different cultural backgrounds from ten countries. They used the collection as the basis for their interpretative works in a range of media as a new way of communicating the richness of Tanikawa's poetry. The refined results of that workshop form the core of this exhibition.
