Based in Osaka, Tsubasa Ako is a highly unique presence in the art scene of the Kansai area of Japan.
Ako is well known for activities beyond exhibitions, including zine publication, running shops that sell bizarre objects, and collaborations with dance unit Contact Gonzo.
Common to these actions is a methodology that extracts symbolism from the seemingly meaningless, delicately making connections to highlight a collective narrative - one that, upon emergence, is simultaneously torn to pieces by her very performance. It is this process of semiological manipulation, which operates as one dynamic system transcending both genre and medium, that is so worthy of attention. For if we observe closely, we may recognize that her creative acts are not haphazard expressions, but rather extremely insightful results of careful observation of contemporary society.
