About the exhibition:
What we experience in everyday life wonders between fiction and reality.
People share their personal stories unguarded over the Internet, communicating
with faceless people. We may never have our own private moment and space
anymore since we are always connecting to the public online. We live in an
environment where we are always conscious of being in the public eye, as if
our way of seeing the world would be controlled by somebody invisible.
There is only a fine line between an everyday situation and an unexpected one
- this is something we have been learning from the natural disasters and conflicts
all over the world. When we look at what is in front of us carefully, the world
looks like one collection of many short stories, a mixture of dream and reality.
I wonder whether we can search the boundary between reality and fiction
someday?
This group exhibition introduces 6 artists from the UK and Japan. Sakamoto,
a participating artist as well as the curator of the show met these artists in
London and Tokyo. Their work consists of photography, painting, drawing and
film installation.A similarity between the artists is the viewpoint to observe
their everyday, and their making process to create narratives crossing the
boundary between fiction and reality. For example; the hidden problems and
histories from narratives of people around us; a story based on a fictional
natural disaster; and a dream about escaping to some other place for people
in the city. These 6 artists are transforming these narratives into an open story
for the audience through various media and methods. They will open up a new
way of seeing the world and show us the importance of creating a new story
from our ordinary lives - it could be one of the ways to realistically picture the
reality where we are now.
