The Sanno Festival of Hie Shrine has been unfailingly, grandly celebrated in the city center of Tokyo since the Edo era on even-numbered years, in alternation with the Kanda Festival. In special recognition of the inter-generational support of local shrine parishioners in carrying on this tradition (specifically that of the Bancho-Kojimachi and Nihonbashi-Kyobashi areas of Tokyo), this exhibition serves to honor the charm of the Sanno Festival through paintings and design elements, in addition to the tools and artifacts unique to each of the surrounding town councils. Further, a number of talks, workshops and walking tours will allow us to experience how Edo culture has been inherited over generations through the Sanno Festival.

[Exhibition] Getting to know the Sanno Festival of today
*Traditional "tenugui" cloths and lanterns from each of nearly 40 local town councils. (Lanterns used in the festival will be removed from display between June 10-12.)
*Ritual "lion heads" of Hie Shrine used in the festival procession.
*Sanno Festival depicted by two living painters: Chikashi Okada (known for woodblock prints of Edo-era firefighters) and Eizo Kinoshita (architect)
*Actual "bottomless floats" used in the festival
(Will be removed from display between June 10-12 for use in the festival.)
*Get in the festival mood by trying on a festival costume in the venue!
*Archival material which testifies to the Sanno Festival of today
