Since 1899, the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) has pioneered the field of practical education in design and engineering in Japan. KIT's new KYOTO Design Lab (D-lab.), founded in 2014, has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to deliver its strategic vision of innovation and excellence in higher education in the fields of architecture and design. The D-Lab aims to identify and solve contemporary social challenges and is the first institute of its kind in Japan to focus on architectural education and research into urban revitalization. In our first exhibition, the D-lab will introduce works from KIT's Master's Program of Architecture and Design. From the works of students who graduated in March 2015, we selected those receiving the Award of Excellence. Kyoto is a city that, while inheriting traditions, also incorporates new elements and is rich with diversity that drives innovation. The works presented here are the ambitious results by those who spent two years in Kyoto and developed an acute sense of awareness. Thinking globally but honing abilities only acquirable in Kyoto - please enjoy the results of our training and practice.
