BSIM The Beppu Subterranean Innards Museum
Kenji Yamada pulled the existence of an underground tunnel system in the depths of Beppu from the territory of urban legend into the realm of reality, bringing irresistible stimulation to our imaginations. And yet, he is neither adventurer nor archaeologist.
Here I would like to quote my own words from the book 'Beppu'.
"Although you can no longer sense the trace of the occupation forces in contemporary Beppu, I still hear stories of orphanages for example, and recently even an underground passageway has been discovered which was built by these forces, their shadow occasionally appearing like some apparition".
Yamada turns his eyes to things existing within the shadows of places.
And although we may not claim this to be the privilege of artists,
I believe it is an important responsibility with which they have been entrusted.
