The POCORART National Open Call Exhibition is an exhibition initiated in 2011 for people with disabilities, those without disabilities and artists in general creating a place of free expression. This exhibition reaches beyond pre-established systems, making no distinction between disability or non-disability, age, exhibition history, instead hoping to open a space to encounter human expression and creativity.
The POCORART National Open Call Exhibition vol.3 allows you to experience this sentiment directly through an exhibition of 214 works, as well as a new feature to this years event in the form of 4 workshops also selected through an open call process.

Organizers: Chiyoda Ward, 3331 Arts Chiyoda
Production: 3331 Arts Chiyoda

Exhibition Section

In the "Exhibition Section" 1332 submissions were received from around the country and through a strict selection process 214 works have been selected for exhibition. Here the space is filled with a world of free creative expression and exceptional energy.

Jurors Comment

Ren Fukuzumi (Art Critic)
I selected work without reference to the artists "disability" status but by selecting work I had never seen before. It is not a case of defending one's own standard to the end, if this is opened up to outside influence then the one may appreciate art to a much greater level. I very much look forward to viewing all of the work directly in the exhibition.

Roger McDonald (Independent Curator)
This selection process was a great experience for me as someone who is interested in "outsider art". Also as someone who cannot read Japanese I was not sure if the works were produced with those who had disabilities or not, but I was able to identify many shared points with contemporary art.

Kenjiro Hosoka (Chief Curator - The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo)
Until now a number of jurors gathered together at the same time to review and select the work but this time it was not possible and so each time the choice seemed to be repeatedly narrowed. This made putting a vote towards each work even harder. This also made the position of the juror most challenging.

Masato Nakamura (artist, Tokyo University of the Arts associate professor, Director of 3331 Arts Chiyoda)
How may can a work of art produced with pure motivation with a pressing contents also acquire a new direction of expression? I approach these 3 points with great care. However the work found in POCORART is all direct and sincere. Therefore as my position as a juror I had to search out for expression which deviated from established forms.

This year POCORART has made an open call for workshops, a system which is still to develop nationally. From the many proposals gained 4 were chosen by the selection committee. We warmly welcome you to take this opportunity to participate.

Hiroko Ootsuki (IDEA,INC. Director)/Workshop Section Juror)
The Backbone of a Workshop
At this moment there seems to be a great popularity of workshops. These workshops encompass all genres and ages of participants and their purpose has become increasingly specialized. In these conditions the number of people organizing workshops has greatly increased. It is within this context that POCORART made an open call for workshops. Here the theme, format, venue and participant number was open to proposal. The conditions of the workshop were that it must be something that could be achieved within 3 hours. However the most important thing was decided. That was to align with the principle of POCORART. To create a space where people with disabilities, those without disabilities and artists may come together and affect each other to the core. This is the backbone of the workshop. If the backbone is not concrete then a proposal can not be formed. Therefore while fitting carefully to each piece of this backbone we three jurors while debating together carefully selected the workshops. We look forward in anticipation to the realization of these proposals and hope for the revelation of a deep new mutual interaction.
