200 years ago we knew nothing about genetics or biotechnology. However in the Edo era there occurred a boom in the cultivation of morning plants which would suddenly change their colour through the dexterous use of mutation. This exhibition presents a series of works based upon such a culture of utilizing the mysteries of plants.

Megumi Baba Profile
Being captivated by the beauty of the organic forms of plants, Baba takes plants with their many shapes and colours, as well as the insects which help to pollinate them as her theme. Staring with painting and printing, she is currently developing copperplate etchings and installations based upon classic specimen drawings of various plants, which approaches through a wide variety of routes from the surprise felt when encountering a mechanism of nature not known before, to the interest in observing the plants around oneself, to the rediscovery of the beauty of plants and flowers which are so cherished by humans.
In this solo exhibition Baba presents a series of work based upon the boom of the "changing morning glory" during the Edo period. Here she pursues the history of such flowers created through a fervent pursuit of the rare and beautiful, by people who held such incredible enthusiasm and patience at a time when little was known of genetics or biotechnology while also giving bloom to the world of imagination with reference to the black and yellow morning glory flower which was impossible to create. With the theme of "mutation" Baba draws upon the power and creativity of the new possibilities which the people of Edo so pursued while as well as that displayed in the diversity of nature, even without the process of selective breeding.
