POCOART is an initiative to open access to the arts for all and to celebrate the creative acitivity of people of all abilities. From 28th January - 10th February 2011 3331 will be hosting a special exhibition of works by artists and creative individuals with disabilities. This is an open call exhibition accepting submissions from all over the country, and aims to provide a unique opportunity to encounter the diverse expressions of creatives from all regions of Japan.

The prolific artist, Katsuhiko Hibino, is always on the move, never resting in one spot for long, he incessantly travels from one place to another and absorbs the unique character of each region. Not only has he been travelling throughout Japan to realize a wide range of collaborative community workshops and projects, but his artistic engagement and spirit of inquiry has led him all over the globe. The notion of travel features heavily in his works, which always engage a form of journey, encountering different places and different people and returning this to the self, as demonstrated in the Home and Away System, presented at the 21st Century Art Museum, Kanazawa. Last year he also undertook a major project as part of the celebrations to mark the 150th year of the opening of Yokohama port, under the title "FUNE project" in which local people joined in collaboration to create 150 model boats based upon historical ships which had entered the port during its history. The port itself being an appropriate image which may lie behind many of Hibino's works, a place of import and export, a place of exchange.
The importance of cultural transactions is central to Hibino's activities, and is highlighted poignantly in the "Asatte Asagao Project", initiated in 2003 as part of the Eichigo-Tsumari Triennial. A pinnacle of his engagement with local communities and his attempt to reveal the special qualities of the local area, "Asatte Asagao Project" creates a new system of communication between distant places through the simple exchange of morning glory seeds. Local communities join together in the nurturing of morning glory plants, their care and attention leading to the blooming of richly coloured flowers. Then their seeds are harvested, and these treasures filled with the character of the local community are then passed on to a different region, a different community to nurture and attend to, the next blossoming carrying with it the message from another land. This project has gone on to develop over a 7 year period to engage people in regions all over Japan and to create a unique connection between all participants. 3331 Arts Chiyoda is also proud to be a participant in this project, the fruit of which can be seen trailing up towards the rooftop from the front entrance wood deck.
The journey always brings new encounters, which Hibino has pursued with rigour, whether it be art and the city, art and soccer, Hibino attempts to bring different worlds together and to realize that they were not necessarily separate from the start. Projects such as "MATCHFLAG" and "Hibino Cup" show the creative possibilities of sports and everyday activities around us.
This exhibition will provide an overview of the journey Hibino has taken over his 30 year career. The exhibition will present a wide range of Hibino's unique projects from his famous cardboard works dating from his student years, to his very latest works, which will create the main feature of the show, a large series of drawings which Hibino has produced during his travels to far off places around the world. As Hibino travels from place to place he finds that his hands can also not stay still and has the constant urge to draw the new experiences, the environments that he encounters. Where does this urge spring from? Is it something innate within human beings? "Why do people draw pictures? ", puts this question to the audience and asks them to tread their own journey in pursuit of the answer. From simple sketches to huge billboard size paintings the exhibition will present, what is perhaps our inherent desire, to take a line for a walk.

Organizers: 3331 Arts Chiyoda
3331 Arts Chiyoda is proud to present the solo exhibition of Katsuhiko Hibino, who is a specially commissioned artist of the art centre. As part of the pre-open celebrations of 3331 in March he presented a series of his sketches created during his travels "What happens when moving from H to A". In addition to this the workshop "MATCH FLAG PROJECT in 3331", proposed a new relation between football and art. Furthermore Hibino has instigated his "Asatte Asagao Project" at 3331, the morning glory plants of which can be seen growing from the wood deck up to the rooftop and continue to blossom each day.
This will be his first such exhibition in Tokyo in 8 years and will present a range of work from over 30 years of his creative career, as well as recent sketches created during his travels in South Africa and Laos. During the exhibition a whole range of events including live painting, "Hibino Cup" (a competition of mini soccer with goal posts made from cardboard and uniform made from your old t-shirts) and guest talk shows are also being planned.
We welcome you to join this exhibition and engage in Hibino's questioning of "Why do people draw pictures?".
Katsuhiko Hibino
Born in Gifu city. During the 1980's he pursued an inter-disciplinary approach to the arts in a style which reflected the era. In addition to creating physical works he also engaged in performance, using his body as a medium of expression and examining the possibilities of the self. He went on to represent Japan in major arts events including the 1986 Sydney Biennial and 1995 Venice Biennale.
Highly acclaimed solo exhibitions include "HIBINO EXPO" at Art Tower Mito, 2005, "Home→and←Away Format" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, 2007 and Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto "HIGO BY_ HIBINO". The 2008 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa "Home→and←Away Format" meets NODA[But-a-I] and the 2009 [But-a-I] at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space constructed performative spaces, experimentally traversing between the gallery, the theatre and the local area. In the 2009 "Grand Exposition for Yokohama's 150th Year" he supervised the "Yokohama FUNE project" and in conjunction with the 2010 World Cup he sent "MATCH FLAG's", created by the collaboration of various participants, to South Africa and created a unique movement in the stadium. Furthermore as part of Setouchi International Art Festival Hibino has been realizing a long term project examining the seabed.
Hibino's well known "Asatte Asagao Project" is a project which has now been running for 8 years now and has energetically spread throughout the country, with participants from different regions around Japan joining in a collaborative work which also points towards the important function of art in society.
Hibino is also currently professor at Tokyo University of the Arts.

A Message from Katsuhiko Hibino
You can see on the wood deck of 3331 the morning glory plants in full health, climbing towards the rooftop. This is part of the Asatte Asagao Project which has developed throughout the country and has now been initiated at 3331 arts chiyoda as well. The seeds of the morning glory plants will come to fruition in Autumn, and at this time I will hold my solo exhibition here. It has been 8 years since I have held a solo exhibition in Tokyo. In this exhibition I am also planning to present some of my earliest works including the card board series from the 1980's. I am also hoping to present the series of drawings I have been making during my travels.
When I think about what motivates me to draw a picture, while travelling sometimes I think I shall probably never visit this place again, and I feel the urge to save this memory, outputting it from my body through drawing, it is a kind of impatience that I feel. Even if I go to a very remote place I now always carry my drawing materials with me. In this exhibition I will present the pictures I have drawn on my travels, including works I plan to draw during my trip across Laos and South East Asia in September. Also recently I have thought about the large scale live painting of the past and now I want to try that too.
With all of this planned as well as talk shows, "Hibino Cup" and many different events I hope you will look forward to the exhibition with anticipation.
Pacman is coming to 3331!

The video game of the 80's "Pacman" is this year 30 years old. In this exhibition in addition to the game software, workshops, talk events and exhibits of young artists' work will be presented, throwing a light upon the many faces of pacman.

As of 5th September two artists hailing from America, Elisabeth Smolarz and Lucie Kim will be joining the 3331 Artist & Curator Residence Program. Both artists pursue a highly participatory and socially engaged practice which questions the structures and social norms of society. Elisabeth Smolarz has been involved in a long term project "The One Hundred Dollar Project" which is being carried out in all the G8+5 member countries, questioning what people will do for one hundred dollars for 1 hour of work. This project will be realized as a video installation, and Japan will be her 10th installment. Smolarz plans to collaborate with local people in the realization of this project. What will you do for $100?

Lucie Kim is also undertaking a project which involves the participation of local residents. In "Wake Up/Make Up" Kim is calling for Tokyo's female population to reveal their "true" selves, asking them to have their photo taken immediately after waking up, and then again when they have dressed and made their face up. Full details are below:

Looking for Participants:
WAKE UP/ MAKE UP
I am looking for women who will allow me to photograph them right when they wake up
and once they put make up on. You do not need to wear a lot make up. The project just
shows the difference between the private and public image.
About the Project:
In 2003 I have started the Wake Up/ Make Up Project. Each morning I take a picture of myself immediately after I wake up and once I have put make up on and am ready to leave my apartment.
The project stems from the realization that women only show their unadorned self to a
selected group of people. For most women it is only the close family that sees them without make up. The project grew to include other women. The ongoing photography project highlights the difference of the public image and the private one.

A space in which young artists can come together, share their vision and support each other. Through encounter with other people young artists have the opportunity to break out of one's shell, and undertake an engagement which does not rely on existing systems and authority but allows one to find independence through self-organization and production. Akibatamabi21 is a place of such discipline. This space is entrusted to young artists who pursue such a vision, a space of possibilities, a space which will witness the fruition of such potential.
New Normal can be interpreted as a way of thought which is not restricted by the existing way of thought. In 2005 a group of students at Tama Art University, Hachioji Campus took over the waste disposal area of the painting department and created an alternative art space "YARIBI". This was intended as a space for exchange between different departments and different universities, with an experimental structure and a driving concept of blending many different forms of creative expression. The result was that artists themselves were able to produce an exhibition space with independence and freedom. YARIBI still continues to this day.
This exhibition "A NEW NORMAL" brings together original members of Yaribi, who will take the core element of their artistic production and enact this in the exhibition space, taking on the challenge of Akibatamabi21.

Sasaki Kousei - Total Affirmation : OK.PERFECT.YES.
As the second part of a series of events and exhibitions celebrating the opening of the new arts centre 3331 Arts Chiyoda (launched on 14th March 2010 - Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) we are pleased to announce an exhibition of work by Kosei Sasaki entitled Total Affirmation : OK.PERFECT.YES.
Kosei Sasaki is an artist who has developed an artistic philosophy through participation in the pioneering avant-garde movement of the 1960s "Jack No Kai" and later pursuing an engagement in counter culture in New York in the 1970's. On returning to Japan in the 1980's he severed his ties with the art world but in recent years has begun to paint again. Currently, in the studio he built himself in Akagisanroku, Gunma, Sasaki can be found vigorously wielding a brush.
This exhibition brings together 50 of Kosei Sasaki's giant abstract paintings to reveal the ideology of the affirmation "Ok. Perfect. Yes" and to bring to the fore an aspect of post-war art history which has until now been difficult to encounter. For Sasaki, who is 82 years old this year, this exhibition is a fresh debut, in which he presents new work for the first time in 40 years. We highly recommend such an opportunity to encounter his works.
