In the second year of a 5-year plan to invite Asian artists whose practice is closely linked with community in order to work within the local area of 3331 and support the cultural development of the neighbourhood through creative production, 3331 is glad to welcome artists from Taiwan, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia. Nguyen Nhu Huy (Vietnam) and Yeoh Lian Heng (Malaysia) join this program for the second time, hoping to develop their research project through greater involvement in the community, while newcomers to the program Li Cheng Hsun (Taiwan), recommended by the JUT Foundation, and Aung Ko (Myanmar) will attempt through workshops and other events to fuse art with community.

The central base for this program this year is the former Tokyo Denki University. With the aim of developing a community art centre here in the future, this Autumn over 200 creatives from all fields of contemporary art, fashion, design, architecture and dance will come together in this one venue. Positioning themselves within this new art movement in Tokyo, it is anticipated that the participating residence artists with their different perspectives of Asia will resonate with the cultural pulse of this creative project and contribute to its development.

Participating Artists

Nyugen Nhu Huy (Vietnam)

Born 1971. Active as the organizer of various exhibitions of young artists and national and international art projects in Ho Chi Minh City and beyond. As well as actively promoting Vietnamese contemporary art internationally he also translates foreign contemporary art texts into Vietnamese. He is a director of the alternative art space Zerostation and a facilitator of "art in marathon". Huy is also co-curator of the 2013 Singapore Biennale.
Huy is undertaking a collaboration with Yoshinori Niwa to explore the memory of consciousness, space and objects. At the same time in a continuation of his intimate video portraits of the Tokyo based Vietnamese community he developed in his previous residence at 3331, he is developing a project questioning the identity of Vietnamese people living in Japan.

Yeoh Lian Heng (Malaysia)

Born in 1978. In 2004 he founded the art space and collective "Lost Generation" with his artist peers, pursuing eclectic expression in the exploration of art's role in society. In his projects Yeoh utilizes art towards greater awareness and understanding of various social issues such as the loss of cultural heritage in "Pudu Community Art Project".
Through dialogue with children and senior citizens Yeoh will develop a "family tree" based upon the various memories shared. Walking through the streets of Tokyo he engages in a process of drawing a line from one point to another, delicately drawing out the stories embedded in each place through interviews and video. As part of his open studio he will also hold a shadow puppet workshop introducing the traditional arts of Malaysia.

Aung Ko (Myanmar)
