April & May 2011 Call for artists for Residence Program

March 26, 2011 / residency

3331 Artist & Curator in Residence Program
Art Matters

April & May 2011

Japan has suffered a great deal from the devastating earthquake and tsunami and we are all led to question what is important to us at this time. And as we consider such things we can only come to an even stronger conclusion as to the significance of art. It is a time to prove this significance.

3331 is calling for artists who wish to undertake this challenge and present their own reading of the power of art. In a time of difficulty what makes art matter? What role can art play in our lives? What meaning can it hold for us? We invite artists to face these questions and pursue personal answers at a time when such matters can not be ignored.

3331 is able to provide accommodation and studio facilities for artists, as well as an opportunity to give a presentation with regard their work to a select audience/general public, along with thorough support being offered towards the artists' projects.

If you are interested to join this program please contact Emma Ota at info@en.3331.jp +81 3-6803-2441 as soon as possible

5% discount if booked for full month = ¥266,000

3331 Arts Chiyoda is dedicated to creating a space where people of all backgrounds and interests are able to come together in a creative environment, and as part of this mission we are proud to be able to offer a unique residency program open to artists, curators and creative practitioners internationally. This includes not only the visual arts but also practitioners in design, architecture, dance and music etc. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo. Not only will artists be able to pursue their own individual research and practice, but they will be connected to the extensive network of Tokyo's art scene through the hub that is 3331. With the energy of the electronics and anime haven of Akihabara right at one's doorstep and the traditional cultures of downtown but a stone's throw away artists will be able to experience all aspects of this kaleidoscopic city from this convenient base. Artists are not only able to spend time in Tokyo, but are able to create work onsite and then finally exhibit what they have developed during their stay, in the distinct setting of 3331 Arts Chiyoda. We are pleased to be able to offer these facilities to artists who can contribute to the diverse creative expressions of this cosmopolitan metropolis and engage its inhabitants in new ways.

Lucas Chirnside & Bianca Looney

March 7, 2011 / residency

ZOETROPE BRIDGE-photo smlwrld.jpg
Collaborative duo, Bianca Looney and Lucas Chirnside (aka SMLWRLD) will be artists in residence at 3331 Arts CYD during March / April 2011. SMLWRLD engages with research based art and design projects ranging in scale from small hand-crafted objects to integrated urban artworks and architecture. Their focus is on site specific processes and an engagement with the landscape, be it social, urban or natural

SMLWRLD will undertake their residency at 3331 fresh from completing the Zoetrope Bridge artwork commissioned by the City of Frankston for Major Projects Victoria. Other recent projects include the furniture system Polytopia collected by a US fashion label after a successful exhibition at the Design Museum London. SMLWRLD are currently working on a range of private and public commissions in Australia and Asia.

During their residency SMLWRLD plan to build on their Geophil manifesto which is an ongoing series of speculative urban landscapes. In the process of exploring Tokyo, where streets seldom bear names and addresses are often located via landmarks, SMLWRLD plans to engage with the local practices of giving and receiving directions. In the age of Google Maps they will return to the hand drawn sketch, questioning to what extent this phenomena still exists and what power these personal expressions have over the landscape of the city. Through participating in brief hand drawn exchanges SMLWRLD hope to document Tokyo's mapping vernacular, retrieving fragments of a speculative map made by Tokyo, in Tokyo.

In the process of collecting and recombining material, SMLWRLD are seeking alternative views and interpretations of place that emerge from a 'local' perspective. The results of their research will be translated via drawings, clippings, assemblages and stories, developed in an open studio environment within the creative hub of 3331 Arts CYD.
