island JAPAN was established in 2010 in Kashiwa, aiming at bringing expression to the world. We all live in the island. All islands are connected to each other by the sea, and they are all covered by the sky.We live in the island called Japan, but we want to bring people and each island together through expression.
island JAPAN runs four spaces, including island MEDIUM, ATRIUM,LAPUTA, and the guest room called island Yukemuri.island MEDIUM (the origin of the word ‘media’) serves as a go-between for people, space and people, and art works and people, a meeting place in other words.ATRIUM (the origin of the word ‘studio’) is a kind of a hall, or a courtyard, where people gather around. This space assists the development of the artists (people who want to express their idea) who are needed in society.LAPUTA (a prefabricated house on the roof of Bigakkou) is a free open space for everyone where events like a barbecue party are held every month and meetings are arranged.Yukemuri is a guest room in Beppu, where travelers take a rest. We hope that each space influences each other and they create a virtuous cycle altogether.
